At the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Florida, during the quarter-finals, Spanish tennis player David Ferrer was losing in his match to American Mardy Fish. While the match was going on, a baby in the stands began to cry. And cry. After losing his serve, a frustrated Ferrer decided to slap a ball into the stands in the general direction of the baby and its father. The ball didn’t hit the child and nothing really happened, other than people actually watched YouTube clips of a middling tennis player doing something stupid.

Now, should the parent have taken the crying child out of the stands? Sure. We’ve all been at that wedding where the clueless parents let their child basically ruin the couple’s ceremony. And, if someone in the stands had yelled at the baby’s father, I would have trouble finding fault. However, there are two problems with the story in my estimation. First, is that if athletes don’t want anything being hurled at them from the stands, then they should avoid tossing their own projectiles into the stands. Athletes are largely exposed as it is and giving a crowd of people an excuse to come after you is a bad idea across the board.

Tennis is a sport, after all, that has seen a female player (Monica Seles) stabbed on the court during a changeover. Sure, she wasn’t harmed too badly – well, except for the psychological impact – but it certainly showed what can happen. Baseball and basketball players have tempted fate repeatedly, both by going into the stands during contests and by engaging the fans in heated exchanges. Those have spilled into violence on more than one occasion and the fact that it hasn’t devolved into an occurrence of serious injury is only because most people are smart enough to stay out of it. If this was Europe and a soccer player on an opposing team decided to go into the stands the way that NBA players Stephen Jackson and Ron Artest once famously did, they wouldn’t be coming back out in one piece. One time, an athlete is going to ignite the wrong powder keg of drunken idiots and we’ll all sit back and act SHOCKED at what happens.

The other issue has to do with the elitist world of sports like tennis and golf. I don’t mind admitting that I’m a happy participant in both sports and I don’t have any problem hanging out at a country club. But the exaggerated reactions of the participants in both sports to anything that can break their concentration borders on the ridiculous. When I’m participating or watching either sport, I do abide by the etiquette that has grown with the sport. However, I also recognize that there are a preponderance of dolts in the world today and I have no expectations that everyone is going to do the same. If Augusta National wants to remove a patron for making noise, I have no problem with it. But, if a player or a caddy decides to go off on someone for coughing during a backswing, that I have no patience for. If you can’t overcome a little noise and keep concentration, then you’re not as good as you think. I’ve played in ProAm’s with some players, and while I marvel at their skill and have found them to largely be gracious, I’ve also come across a group of players that are…well, babies.

I’ve spent less time with tennis players, but from a distance, they seem even more on edge about what spectators are doing. Most elite tennis players are coddled from an early age and often are too far removed from what most of us would consider normal society. Much like recent generations of basketball players, and to lesser degree athletes in every sport, they have had too many years of people telling them they’re great. Anyone who interferes with their self-stylized greatness is a moron or a pest or both. Trying to get people in that position to recognize that they only way that they have the opportunity to enjoy privileges is solely because of consumer dollars, either in ticket sales or sponsorships, is like trying to explain the theory of relativity to an aardvark.

Unfortunately, the mindsets are so far ingrained that it’s next to impossible to change these High School behaviors that come with it. Tennis players will still yell at fans to shut up and golfers will still admonish photographers for clicking a camera during their stroke. It’s asinine, but that’s the world that they live in. They should just avoid doing anything that would cause the masses of people around them to decide to reach in and pull them out of it.

Andy Murray was confident about getting the gold medals in both, singles and doubles, at the Olympics; but his singles goal was over yesterday. The ranked number six of the world, was left out of the Olympics by loosing 7-6, 6-4, against the number 77 Lu-Yen Hsun, in the first round. This was an unexpected result, because after winning at Cincinnati many thought that Murray will be at the top of his confidence and form. However, his lack of performance led him into the end of his individual category participation at Beijing.

The Scot player lost break advantages in the first set to Lu-Yen Hsun, who had more precision of shots and a lead before the rain postponed the game. In the second set Murray had all the chances to win the set, but Lu-Yen Hsun was more consistent, more confident and more enthusiastic to win than Murray.

Lu improved his game more when he knew Murray’s concentration was out. The Taipei Chinese never lost his hopes, and maintained himself in a position that took Murray to complete frustration. In this way the Taipei Chinese managed to take the number six of the world out of the Olympics.

Murray’s poor selection of shots and the suffocating persistence of Lu’s game, led Andy to make a lot of mistakes. The Scottish’ aggravation appeared worst at the end of the match, because of his horrible serves and bad execution. On the other hand, Lu kept all his confidence from beginning to end and played in an incredible way. Probably, Lu’s key was that he never lost his composure or concentration.

In the United Kingdom tennis ranking, Murray is currently number one. He’s been having a better season this year, winning his fourth and fifth International Series titles: first in the 2008 Qatar ExxonMobil Open, where he beaten Stanislas Wawrinka; and later in Marseille’s tournament, defeating Mario Ancic in the final. Additionally, in his opening match at Dubai, he defeated world number one, Roger Federer; but lost during the quarterfinals. More importantly, after not having even reached a final in a Master Series event, Andy won his first ATP Master Series title at Cincinnati 2008; title that has become the best acquisition in Murray’s career until now.

However, the latest lost at Beijing was humiliating for Andy Murray, who had been though to at least obtain a bronze medal. Now the Scot player will prepare with his older brother Jamie for the doubles. The Murray brothers will play Canada’s Daniel Nestor and Frederick Niemeyer on Monday 11th.

Now, the Scots are hoping to obtain a victory in doubles category and, no matter what, Andy and Jamie will do their best to obtain their dream, which is a Gold medal.

U.S. top seed Andy Roddick, seeking his third crown Memphis and 30 ATP title, survived Australian Lleyton Hewitt 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals of the ATP and WTA event inside.

Ranking eighth Roddick fired 21 aces to win the clash between former world number one booking a date on Saturday with 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina.

Which ousted the American Michael Russell 6-4, 6-2. Hewitt, ranked 70: th, broke Roddick to open the match and twice more to take the opening set but Roddick returned to win in two hours 13 minutes for his sixth straight victory over Australia.

capturing his first advance in their career rivalry 7-6. “He played better early,” Roddick said. “He keeps it away. It certainly you win if you want to get a win.”A fight can turn quickly, and he did tonight in the third set.The end of the second set and third set was probably the best I’ve played in this tournament so far.

“Hewitt, who turns 30 next week, looking for her 29: career title, his first since last year at Halle. He did not beat Roddick since 2005-the Indian Wells semi-finals but had a chance until Roddick seized control in the second set. “He did a lot of unforced errors at the beginning.

Its percentage of use was probably not as high as it would have liked,” Hewitt said.”I could not get into his service games and put pressure on it from there. ” He is one of the best farm there with his servant, when he stopped playing. “Roddick, 10-2 this year, is a victory of his Memphis fifth. He has won titles in 2002 and 2009 and was a finalist in the case in 2003 and 2007.

We know and have seen how video analysis can be used to analyze a tennis players performance, but it can also be used in real time or almost real time to track the ball and even make close line calls. Of course I am talking about the “Shot Spot” or Hawk-Eye system.

If you have watched any Major Tennis since 2006, you will know exactly what Hawk-Eye is. The Hawk-Eye is used to make decisions on line calls that are challenged by the tennis player. Each player (or team if playing doubles) can challenge a line call on any point. They get a maximum of 2 incorrect challenges each set. If the set goes to a tie break an extra challenge is allowed. Basically the Hawk-Eye challenge enables the tennis players to use technology to challenge line calls they think are incorrect.

The technology being used by the Hawk-Eye system is Video Analysis. Here is how it works.

Multiple cameras are placed around the court and players. These cameras are usually placed high up, so that there is less chance that a player will be blocking the ball from the camera view. Multiple cameras are used to ensure accuracy of tracking the ball and to account for possible occlusion (the ball being hidden from the camera view by the players body…) The system uses at least 4 high speed video cameras, with a capture rate presumed to be 500 frames per second. The camera position is calibrated to determine its position in space and relative to the other cameras in the system. The lines on the court are also used in calibration and to compensate for any camera movement. The center of the ball is tracked in 2D by each camera. The ball therefore is like a reflective marker or point on the body. Using the information from all the cameras, the Hawk-Eye system then triangulates the 3D position of the ball. This process is done for each captured frame so that a trajectory of the ball can be created and then overlayed on an animated background containing the lines of the tennis court. Finally the skid and compression of the ball is measured by examining the position and trajectory of the ball prior to the bounce and its position and trajectory after the bounce. In this way they can determine how long the ball was on the ground and how it skidded over the ground. The Hawk-Eye system is said to have an accuracy of 3.6 mm.

I believe that the use of video technology in this way is great for the sport of tennis and for the players piece of mind as well as spectator enjoyment. However we have seen a number of controversial calls with the Hawk-Eye system. Take a look at video of 2 big ones here.

In this first video we see a very tight call for Mikhail Youzhny over Rafael Nadal at Dubai in 2007.

This second video is from the Wimbledon final in 2007. Rafael Nadal benefiting from a very close one over Roger Federer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKhPQqul7_Y&feature=player_embedded

In both cases we would have to say that the ball likely looked out to the lines judge who made the call. In both cases the player is most likely only challenging the call because it is a crucial point (Yozhny vs Nadal – Set Point, Nadal vs Federer – Break point). The Hawk-Eye system suggests that in both cases these calls were measured as being 1mm IN, meaning the ball was 1mm from being out. Could Hawk-Eye have been wrong in either or both of these calls and what does it mean that it is 2-3 mm accurate but can suggest that the ball was in by only 1mm? Here are some points that may effect the accuracy of the system.

The camera capture rate of 500 frames per second may be too slow for the hard hitting tennis game of today. Andy Roddick has recorded a fastest serve at 155 mph and ground strokes are often hit with a similar speed. Assuming a capture speed of 500 frames per second or 1 frame every 0.002 seconds, the ball will have moved about 139 mm for every video frame. This may not be sufficient data to determine the position of the ball to within 1 mm. The more cameras that are used the better the chance of tracking the ball and the higher the accuracy. However there are possibilities of occlusion by players, tennis rackets and the net, which will lead to reduced accuracy. High speed video capture also needs excellent lighting. We have discussed the importance of lighting for high speed capture in a previous post . Therefore the system will work best under a roof with artificial bright lighting and will possibly have a problem tracking the ball outdoors, particularly when there is cloud cover or as it gets later into the evening. Assuming everything is perfect for capture, the center of the ball has to be identified as accurately as possible too. If a camera sees the ball at a funny angle or partly occluded the center may not be correctly defined by this one camera and the position of the ball will be inaccurate. The skid and compression of the ball is being estimated and extrapolated based on the trajectory of the ball before and after the bounce. Any inaccuracies in tracking the position and flight of the ball will become larger during an extrapolation (estimation of the movement).

The Hawk-Eye system may not be perfect but it is definitely a step up from the eyeball view of a line judge, particularly when the ball is moving at high speed. We believe Hawk-Eye has improved the line calls in Tennis and this is great for the players and spectators alike. However it still leaves room to debate exciting points and close matches. Enjoy the US Open Tennis and hopefully we will not see any controversial Hawk-Eye calls.
